African Journalism Workshop for Chinese Journalists 2016

The Wits China-Africa Reporting Project (the Project) at Wits Journalism is seeking applications from Chinese journalists to participate in a practical skills and training workshop and reporting exercise in Johannesburg in October 2016.

The workshop will take place in Johannesburg for about two weeks in the period 17-28 October 2016. See the section How to Apply below for more details on applying for the workshop.

The workshop, which will consist of practical skills training for Chinese journalists on how to report in and on Africa, will be open to Chinese print, newspaper, radio and digital journalists, including those working in China, Africa and globally. The Project will provide airfares, accommodation and related expenses, and the selected journalists will all become fellows of the Project and part of the Project’s global community.

As the workshop will involve a week of fieldwork and reporting, journalists will be expected to include a specific Africa-China research proposal in their applications.

Practical training and skills workshop

The first week of the workshop will consist of broad-ranging lectures and training at Wits Journalism, with the emphasis on practical skills development for doing journalism in and on Africa. The lectures and training of the first week will be partly in English and partly in Chinese; an interpreter will be available at all times. Lectures and training will be provided by Project and Wits Journalism staff as well as by experienced lecturers from China HouseAfrica Check, and China Africa Project among others.

In addition to training and lectures at Wits Journalism, the first week of the workshop will also include visits and excursions to enhance the overall experience of African journalism, including to South African newsrooms, Chinese and African companies, Soweto day trip, etc. Workshop participants will also be introduced to the Wits community and the Project will facilitate their attendance and participation in events and activities as far as possible.

Fieldwork and reporting

During the second week the journalists will be given time and support to undertake fieldwork in and from their base in Johannesburg to produce limited journalistic outputs based on their own individual proposals and the skills and training of the first week of the workshop. The Project will provide workshop participants with a daily stipend during the second week of the workshop in order to conduct fieldwork.

How to apply

Chinese journalists are invited to send applications addressing the requirements below in an email entitled “APPLICATION: AFRICAN JOURNALISM WORKSHOP 2016” to africa-china@journalism.co.za BY NO LATER THAN 19 AUGUST 2016.

Applications should contain the following:

  • Applicant CV and short personal bio (no more than 250 words)
  • List of applicant’s previous published reporting on Africa and/or Africa-China, including online links where available
  • Proposal for a relevant and specific Africa-China topic to be pursued during fieldwork of the second week of the workshop

Please take note of the following when preparing proposals:

  • Applications should preferably be submitted in English but can also be submitted in Chinese
  • Successful applicants must be registered as Wits vendors and must be free to travel to South Africa in October 2016
Workshop participants will be provided with airfares, accommodation, three daily meals, workshop attendance and training materials, and a daily fieldwork stipend
  • Journalists are encouraged to keep in mind the Project’s guidelines for reporting grants, which call for proposals with a relatively narrow focus around specific projects or issues
  • It would be ideal if applicants understand and speak English well but applicants with less than fluent English ability are also encouraged to apply
