The Africa-China Journalists Forum & Photo Exhibition took place at Wits University on 1 November. The Photo Exhibition featured 20 images taken by 14 photographers; at the Forum Justin Hui, Hong Kong-based photographer and architect, led a discussion of all the images in the exhibition. The Photo Exhibition followed a call for submissions opened by the Project in August 2018 for images that best encapsulate "Africa-China", i.e. emphasising on-the-ground African impact and perspectives to illustrate how the lives of the people of Africa are changing amid the comprehensive phenomenon of Africa-China interactions.
The winner of the Africa-China Photo Exhibition was Chinese photographer Liu Yuyang with his series of photographs entitled Drifting in West Africa: How Inshore Overfishing Drives Distant Water Fishing of China, taken on board fishing vessels off Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau in the Atlantic Ocean. The other participants in the exhibition are Kunle AJAYI (Nigeria), Victor ANIA (Nigeria), Katherine CHENG (Canada), Romain DITTGEN & Gerald CHUNGU (South Africa), Justin HUI (Hong Kong), Mohamed KAMAL (Egypt), Gaspard MAHEBURWA (Burundi), Jenni MARSH (UK), Megan McPHADEN (Canada), Luyanda NDABA (South Africa), John OMONDI (Kenya), Peter TEMISAN (Nigeria), and Claire VAN DEN HEEVER (South Africa).
The exhibition was displayed in the Atrium of the Southwest Engineering Building on the Wits East Campus:
