South Africa–China Relations. A Partnership of Paradoxes (2021) is the first book focusing on the history and extent of South Africa-China relations. The book features fourteen chapters by some of the leading Africa-China scholars, economists, historians and authors, divided into four parts:

  • Foundations of the relationship, including the establishment of relations and the evolution of South African foreign policy towards China
  • The political economy of a special relationship, including the growth of economic relations and media engagement
  • Sectoral studies, including Special Economic Zones, investments in agriculture, labour relations, and culture and education, and
  • Chinese communities, including South Africa's Chinese community and its search for security

The webinar will feature the editors Professor Chris Alden (London School of Economics) and Dr Yu-Shan Wu (University of Pretoria), and will also feature some of the chapter authors. The discussant will be Professor Garth Le Pere (University of Pretoria), and the host will be Bongiwe Tutu (Assistant Project Coordinator, Africa-China Reporting Project).
