REPORT: Covering Critical Minerals and Mining Workshop, AIJC, 30 October 2024

The Africa-China Reporting Project (ACRP), and the China-Global South Project (CGSP) participated in the annual and 20th African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC), an initiative of the Wits Centre for Journalism (WCJ), and the largest gathering of African investigative journalists on the continent. The AIJC took place from 30 October – 1 November 2024. The conference was held at the Wits Science Stadium, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

The projects presented the Covering Critical Minerals and Mining Workshop. The workshop session took place from 15:20 – 16:20, Ruth First Room (WSS104), as part of the full AIJC conference programme.

Conference Session Description:
Africa is home to an estimated 30% of the critical minerals, metals and resources that will be needed to power the green transition around the world. While these valuable resources provide a unique opportunity for African countries to move up the global EV supply chain and generate billions of dollars for the needed economic development, they also threaten to prolong the “resource curse” that has done immeasurable damage. Where are the mines? What are the minerals? Which African countries are most active? Which foreign countries are most active? What are the minerals/metals used for? This session looks to answer some of these and many more questions.

Speakers:
• Christian-Geraud Neema Byamungu, CGSP/Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
• Sakhile Dube, Independent, Journalist, South Africa
• Asha Bekidusa, Royal Media Services Ltd Reporter, Kenya
• Njenga Hakeenah, Africa Climate Editor, China-Global South Project
