The Wits China-Africa Reporting Project, housed in the Journalism Department of the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, invites suitably qualified journalists to submit proposals for reporting grants focused on China-Africa issues. African, Chinese, and global journalists are eligible.
We are looking to support original, impartial and insightful investigations, reports and analyses delving into the many facets of China’s presence and influence in Africa. The articles should demonstrate evidence-based journalistic research.
Themed reporting grants
Grants of between $300 and $2000 are on offer for journalists with ideas for in-depth investigative projects around specific themes including: Infrastructure, Mining, Investment, Migrants, ICT and Media, Science and Technology, Environment, Conservation and Wildlife.
Local stories
Grants of $300 are available for journalists who can contribute an interesting, original China-Africa story from their countries or regions.
Applications should include an outline of the story idea, a budget, travel plan as well as a short resume and two examples of published work. Journalists should also indicate where the article would be published and ideally supply a letter of support from their editor.
Email applications to africa-china@journalism.co.za
The project is also looking to cultivate regional media analysts who are able to effectively examine and analyse media responses to China-Africa-related topics and/or China-Africa media engagements. Grants of $500 per story are available.
